From 1 August 2024, all internet-connected radio equipment will need to meet certain cybersecurity requirements under Radio Equipment Directive (RED). For grid operators, this equipment will include smart meters and RTUs with built-in modems, even if these are not connected to the internet for normal use.
On 22 August 2023, CEN/CENELEC published an updated draft of the harmonized standard for the RED cybersecurity requirement. The harmonized standard specifies how manufacturers should interpret the requirement technically. If the standard contain requirements that are not feasible for grid operator equipment, these may lead to higher equipment costs. Hence, we have organized a review session for the standard on September 11.
